For Tuesday, bring copies of your paper drafts with you from all the assignments you have completed for me this semester. You can have these on a computer if you wish, the idea is that I want to have a conversation with everyone in the class about the challenges they faced writing in general and the particular problems they had with revision. After all, diagnosing areas of concern or errors is just the first step and making the corrections can be more difficult than it first appears.
On Tuesday we will also complete the in class project we started last Tuesday, so be sure to bring back the sample papers I gave you.
Thursday, you need to create the list of the types of comments I have given you. Again, these should not include content-based comments. Rather, I want you to pull out the type of stylistic errors you make and then categorize them. For example, I don't need a list of the eight times I told you not to end a sentence on a preposition. Instead, you need to write "avoid ending sentences on prepositions." Or, if you have frequently mistaken when italicization or quotation marks are used, write out the rule about when to use them. This assignment should help you diagnose your recurring problems so that you can know your own tics in the future.
For the list of comments that is due on Thursday, do you want us to send that to you or bring in a hard copy for class?
ReplyDeletePlease send it to me before the start of class for a participation grade and then we'll use it for a discussion. You don't necessarily need to bring it on Thursday unless that would help you remember the particular problems you've had over the course of the semester.
